Volkswagon Deisel

Volkswagon has at least one, maybe two, deisel powered cars. The Jetta and maybe the Golf. While diesel is cheaper to buy that regular gas and it gets better gas mileage, I'm still unclear on the pollution aspect. It's always been my impression that diesel pollutes more. While the VWs don't spew out black smoke like most deisel cars and trucks, does that mean they don't create the pollution?
