Volkswagon Jetta

The Volkswagon Jetta has pretty always been a popular car for Volkswagon. Maybe even considered trendy by some people. Its reliability history has been pretty good for the most part, but not without some suspicious concerns. For some reason, the 2005 Jetta is available as a diesel. My understanding is that diesels pollute more than regular gas. So I don't understand why VW would want to create a diesel car (that hasn't been a diesel before) at this point in time. Have they come up with a new diesel engine that doesn't pollute as much?
